Sheffield Village History

Nestled in the southeast corner of Oakland – along the border of San Leandro – lies a small community known as Sheffield Village. Built in the late 1930s and 1940s by a local developer, the E.B. Field Company, this nostalgic neighborhood maintains much of its original character. The city of Oakland declared it a Historic District in 2005.

Homeowners are drawn to the neighborhood for its charm, the views of the Bay from many homes, the surrounding open space hills, and three neighborhood parks. It is conveniently located near transportation corridors, shops, the Oakland Zoo and the San Leandro BART station.

Filled with single-family homes, a majority of the architecture in Sheffield Village is traditional, bungalow, or mid-century modern. The average home is approximately 1,600 square feet and has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Homes in this neighborhood typically sit on 5,000-8,000 square foot lots.

The local park and recreation center offers summer camps and classes for both children and adults, and it may also be rented for private events. There are sports fields and both basketball and tennis courts. With an active Homeowners Association, the community puts on events like an annual village picnic, the Easter egg hunt and village-wide garage sale. In addition to the recreation center and its parks, Sheffield Village has direct access to the hiking trails of the Dunsmuir Ridge Open Space and is a quick drive to Lake Chabot Regional Park.
